A Customs Duty of 10% will be levied on the importation of all used vehicles from Japan. Used Japanese vehicles will be subject to a 21% VAT. The Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) is determined according to the Open Market Selling Price (OMSP) of the vehicle.

Importing right-hand drive used Japanese cars is allowed in Ireland. Ireland follows left-hand side driving. Additionally, Japan used cars can be imported through various ports in Ireland, including Rosslare, Arklow, Wicklow, Dún Laoghaire, Howth, Drogheda, and Dundalk. It’s important to note that used Japanese vehicles older than 4 years must undergo the National Car Test (NCT) in Ireland before they can be imported, even if they have previously passed a similar test.

The owner will receive the following documents:

  • VRT (Vehicle Registration Tax) receipt, indicating the assigned registration number.
  • Form RF 100, required for motor tax application. Vehicle insurance is mandatory for driving in public places, and it must be obtained before paying the motor tax. The motor tax amount is determined based on the vehicle’s engine size.
