USED CAR IMPORT RULES AND REGULATIONS

Importation of vehicles from Japan is restricted to right-hand drive vehicles only. Special permission is necessary for the importation of left-hand drive used Japanese vehicles, in accordance with Section 79(1) of the Customs Control and Management Act. While citizens of St. Vincent have certain allowances for importing used Japanese cars, there are limitations in place for vehicles that use ozone-depleting substances in their air conditioning systems.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED

  1. Original Bill of Lading
  2. Insurance certificate (if necessary)
  3. ASYCUDA Bill of Lading Proof of payment
  4. Original invoice document (to be acquired from the supplier and should include particulars such as sales conditions, names of the supplier and buyer, price, and vehicle delivery terms) CIF, FOB, or C&F document (providing comprehensive vehicle details) Bill of Sight (used for information validation)

Upon satisfying all conditions and document requirements set by the Customs Branch, the importer will receive clearance to proceed with the importation process for the used vehicle from Japan. However, if the submitted documents fail to meet the specified criteria, the Customs Branch will establish the vehicle’s value in accordance with the Valuation laws. Importantly, if requested, the Customs can send a notification to the importer, allowing them to make representations regarding this determination.

For vehicles directly purchased from the supplier, online transactions may be employed to expedite the verification process. Additionally, upon the vehicle’s arrival at Customs, the client should be prepared to present all relevant records, including emails, payment confirmations, photographs, and any other pertinent documentation.
